Edwin Boyd: Citizen Gangster

After World War II, returning war veteran Edwin Boyd (Scott Speedman) struggles to reintegrate into society and provide for his wife (Kelly Reilly) and children. While dreaming of a Hollywood career, he rises to become a media darling as a charismatic bank robber. With the feared Boyd Gang, he robs Canadian banks of their customers’ savings. But sudden fame comes at a price... Based on a true story, the original film bears the name of the man it portrays: “Edwin Boyd.” Scott Speedman embodies the main character—who went from family man to notorious gangster—with great charisma, convincingly portraying the inner conflict between family responsibilities, the desire for recognition, and the lure of quick money. Unlike many gangster films, however, Nathan Morlando’s film does not glorify its protagonist but instead shows the personal and societal consequences of Boyd’s decisions. The supporting cast, particularly Kelly Reilly and Kevin Durand, contributes to the story’s credibility, which relies less on action and is instead characterized by its authentic atmosphere and understated direction.
