Under the Pavement Lies the Strand

Grischa and Heinrich are theatre actors in West Berlin. After a night together in the dressing room, they become a couple. Soon, however, Heinrich's desire for a child leads to dissent between the two: Grischa is involved on the fringes of the women's movement and questions working-class women about their everyday lives, abortions and male violence; Heinrich, on the other hand, mourns the unfulfilled utopias of the student movement and surrenders to self-pity and lethargy. Grisha does not trust him with the responsibility for a child. But she becomes pregnant. Helma Sanders-Brahms' film debut is considered a central film of the German women's movement and the 1968 movement. A significant document, at the same time an outstanding example of the awakening of young German film.
