A famous actor (Morgan Freeman), who has been retired from showbiz for several years, ends up in the Latino neighborhood of Los Angeles while preparing for a new role. Abandoned by his ride (Jonah Hill), the gruff supermarket cashier Scarlet (Paz Vega) seems to be his only way to get back on familiar ground. The feisty young woman with the fascinating charisma sits at the fast checkout - where you queue with ten items or less.
When it transpires that Scarlet has a job interview coming up and that professional acting coaching would be just what she needs, the actor convinces the young woman to let him accompany her. What starts out distant and cautious turns into a wonderful day in which the boundaries between star and normal person disappear and the unusual couple immerse themselves in each other's lives.
“The production looks as if the inventors of the French nouvelle vague only came up with their ideas today and therefore only discovered the original location with the simplest camera equipment today. Everything is wonderfully relaxed. I can watch Morgan Freeman as the nameless ex-star and the delightful, charming, beautiful Paz Vega (“Spanglish”) [...] for hours while they have their conversations first in the supermarket and then in the car across Los Angeles.” (christophhartung.de)
“10 Items or Less” is the first production in film history that could be legally downloaded from the Internet while it was still being shown in cinemas. The American provider ClickStar, a joint venture between Morgan Freeman, producer Lori McCreary and Intel, released a digital copy on December 15, 2006, just 14 days after the film's premiere. However, the opportunity to use the offer was limited to US users. The American Film Institute rated the digital release as one of the most significant events in its annual review.
