The East German farmer Hermann Güden (Narziss Sokatscheff) has had enough of the state-ordered harassment by the SED superiors. He is no longer willing to submit to the forced collectivization at home in his village in Saxony-Anhalt, as this state of affairs no longer offers him any prospects. And so he plans in advance to flee to the West. Güden first sends his wife and child to western Berlin and wants to join them as soon as possible. But the SED apparatchiks get wind of the matter. In the heat of the moment, Güden beats up party comrade Baade (Christian Doermer) and then flees.
