When Ivanhoe and Wamba are attacked by Front-de-Boeuf and his men in Master Albert’s tavern, a strange character comes to their aid, provoking a surprising explosion with a strange black powder. Before fleeing, the man tells our hero to meet him in York. The following night, Ivanhoe meets the mystery man – Blake, and alchemist loyal to King Richard who relentlessly pursues his life’s quest of turning lead into gold. But a few days later, Blake is arrested in his laboratory by Front-de-Boeuf and taken to York castle. Changing lead into gold – this would certainly help matters for the Regent! He could strengthen and expand his power. And make short work of Ivanhoe.
